These pieces were designed and built for a couple who wanted matching built-in bookcases and cabinets on either side of the existing fireplace in their new condo on Chicago’s north side. The first stage was to develop and present design drawings. The existing fireplace had fluted mouldings so I proposed matching those on the vertical stiles of the bookcases. The living room and kitchen/dining area are all part of one open space, it was also important to differentiate the bookcase/ cabinets from the existing kitchen cabinets which were also white and of of a similar construction. Adding paneled sides with mouldings as well as crown moulding at the tops of the cases along with the fluted stiles gave them a more formal look that was a nice fit for the living room. The construction was of premium maple veneers and solid maple board stock with a sprayed satin finish that matched the existing woodwork. The interiors of the base cabinets integrated existing wiring for the electronics and cables with routing options via grommets and scalloped backs on the shelves.
