An extraordinary opportunity and challenge…

• Materials: Quarter sawn white oak
• Finish: Aniline dyes, gel stain and oil based polyurethane

The couple who hired me to design and build this piece(s) had seen a quarter sawn oak cabinet with leaded glass panes on my site from a few years ago. They wanted a piece with similar aesthetics that would pass through the wall from their kitchen to the dining room, have an 8′ tall cabinet on the kitchen side as well as a companion piece/cabinet on the other side of the wall that would be different but similar in it’s aesthetics, back to back double cabinets. An extraordinary opportunity and challenge.

We started out talking through what they would like and how they wanted to use the cabinets on each side. They were interested in possibly incorporating a marble top for the bar, puck lights, leaded glass, a paneled and also beveled glass backsplash as well as closed and open cabinet space and possibly open bookshelves. I created a series of design drawings and we reviewed those and I then created a second series dialing in on the details that were coming together on each side.

They have a beautiful vintage four-square Victorian home that is 100+ years old and has a lot of egg and dart crown moulding so we used that as well. When you walk through from the front door to the kitchen the first piece which is depicted in this portfolio is on the right as you enter the kitchen. As you pass through the open doorway into the dining room the piece in the dining room is exactly back to back and the same dimensions as the other. The kitchen has the open bookcases at the bottom with leaded glass panes on the doors at the top which is featured in the previous portfolio. This piece is the dining room side and has the open bar and beveled mirror backsplash.

All were constructed of quarter sawn white oak finished with a combination of aniline dyes, gel stain and oil based polyurethane. (click anywhere on the right side of featured photos to scroll through multiple views)
