There was an open inset in the dining room of my clients home that once had a built in of some sort but it was long gone. They wanted a new piece that would be contemporary but also aesthetically complement some of the nice details in the millwork of the vintage home. I presented a series of design drawings exploring different possibilities for the upper and lower cabinets, center shelving drawers etc. We decided it would be a nice accent to make the center top and shelves of stained red oak which would also be much more durable and resistant to marking than sprayed white.
