This project involved designing and building four red oak bookcases to integrate with the beautiful original woodwork in a vintage house in the historic Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago. The homeowners had a very large living room and wanted 8′ bookcases for each of four corners. I developed design models and we selected one that incorporated fluted vertical casings which are part of the woodwork in other parts of the house. The house is 120 years old and the floors had settled significantly. The bases are designed with profiled feet and each foot (40 of them) was calibrated to fit on the section of floor where the particular bookcase sat, a difference of 2″ in height depending on different parts of the room. They were finished with a custom matched gel stain to integrate with the original woodwork and finished with three coats of oil rub on polyurethane.(Click on the right side of the photo to see multiple views of the project)
