The homeowners wanted a maple radiator cover for a large radiator in their kitchen. They also wanted the finish to match the existing cabinets. A series of stain samples were created in the shop and that was accomplished. They also requested a hinged top so that the inside could be accessed, I had just completed a window seat with large tops that incorporated soft close hinges so that fingers wouldn’t get pinched. Sugatsune hinges are beautifully engineered with a very nice smooth soft close movement so I used one of those again. The cabinet doors have a sculpted profile on the edges so I proposed a scalloped leg profile when presenting design drawings. Maple can be very difficult and blotchy to finish, sealing the maple with clear shellac cut to half strength prevented that, after two coats of stain three coats of satin polyurethane finish were applied to the case with five coats on the top.
