A few years ago I built  a large Craftsman cabinet with leaded glass doors that appears here on my site. That was commissioned by neighbors/ friends right across the street, a super cool piece to work on. They’ve wanted a couple living room tables that would be in a similar style and finish and we’ve talked about those for a couple years and recently decided to move forward. The challenge was to build something that was really distinctive and couldn’t be bought in a store. We both researched on line and settled on the design you see here which is based on a pattern from 2005 in Fine Woodworking Magazine. The gridded rails underneath, bread boards at the ends of the tops and pyramid shaped through tenons and caps were really elegant details. Pretty technical carpentry that made them super cool to build. I adapted the pattern to a 25″ x 52″ x 18″ coffee table and also a smaller/ taller end table. The material is quarter sawn white oak finished with a base layer of aniline dye with gel stain on top to bring out the beautiful figuring by accenting the soft grain of the quarter sawn oak. They then got multiple layers of General Finishes satin polyurethane to finish them off. The same process as in the previous china cabinet only with a somewhat deeper finish.
