The homeowners who are also neighbors have a 100+ year old 4-square Victorian home that they are gradually restoring. Their dining room had a small built-in shelf unit that was very dated and in bad repair. We assumed there was a larger empty recess behind the plaster on that wall. They wanted a new tall full height built-in China cabinet to store glassware, china, silverware and linens. I created a series of design drawings exploring different drawer configurations as well as different glass door treatments in regards to how the mullions and frames could be milled. They chose the options they preferred with the request that the piece have a bead board back in a muted sky blue, an aesthetic that is seen on some Southern farm homes and that we incorporated a few years ago on the bead board ceiling of their front porch restoration, very cool. They also selected cut glass knobs for the doors and drawers. I started with the demo of the old wall which went well and as we expected, installed new sheetrock and then built the new piece in the shop. The cabinet is spray finished with a satin surface, very smooth with a soft polish. (Click on photos to scroll through multiple views).
