The couple that commissioned this piece have a young daughter with a lot of toys she plays with in their living room. They wanted her to be able to do that but also be able to put them away easily. The solution was a large 10′ x 26″ window seat that would be built into the front bay of the room. The piece was designed to have three large boxes inside made of birch veneer finished with clear satin polyurethane. It was also important that the large tops had really good soft close hinges so there would be no pinched fingers. The project included re-routing a floor register to the front baseboard of the cabinet and also milling cap mouldings to match the original existing ones in the 100+ year old house. The exterior of the window seat was spray finished with a very smooth alkyd satin finish paint. (Click on the right side to scroll through multiple views.)
